Chargeback Prevention Guide
Practical steps merchants can take to reduce chargebacks and respond to disputes effectively.
A chargeback happens when a cardholder disputes a transaction directly with their bank instead of the merchant. Excessive chargebacks put a merchant account at risk of fines, added reserves, or termination — so prevention and fast response matter more than most merchants realize.
Prevent disputes before they happen
Use a clear, recognizable billing descriptor, confirm orders and shipping with email receipts, make cancellation and refund policies easy to find, and use address/CVV verification on card-not-present transactions.
Catch fraud early
Velocity checks, device fingerprinting, and manual review on high-ticket or first-time orders catch a meaningful share of fraudulent transactions before they become chargebacks.
Respond to disputes quickly
Most card networks give merchants a limited window to respond with compelling evidence — receipts, delivery confirmation, communication logs. Missing that window is an automatic loss, regardless of the transaction's legitimacy.
